There seems to be quite a lot of confusion about the different kind of training and education needed to be a massage therapist, and much of this focuses on the difference between a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT).
In the area where this writer lives, “certified” can mean anything from having passed a one-day training course at a community college to training for four years at an institution sponsored by the government. In reality, the only thing it means here to be an RMT is that the local College of Massage Therapy has put the therapist through some tests, determined they are sufficiently knowledgable and skilled, and have issued them a number so they can issue receipts.
This does not necessarily mean that a CMT is better at his or her job than an RMT. We know of at least one certified massage therapist that is more skilled than a lot of Registered Massage Therapists.
And by the way, if you are already a massage practitioner, whether you have been struggling for years, or are just fresh out of massage training school, you may want to check out these tips on how to improve your massage business and earn a full-time living as a massage therapist.
